Little Hadham Fun DayBiggest crowd at Little Hadham Fun Day

An estimated 700 people passed through the gates at Little Hadham’s first-ever Fun Day on Sunday, making it the best attended event for as long as anyone can remember.

“Our fun day was exactly that – everyone had a really good time despite the occasional downpour. The general feeling was that it achieved the aim of building community spirit and there was a lot of support for making it an annual event,” said Mike Smith, who chaired the organising committee.

The ‘crowd’ included an assortment of scarecrows that survived the rain and the journey from their homes to take part in the scarecrow competition. The winners were Little Hadham Primary school for their ‘family’ of traditional scarecrows that brightened the lives of drivers queuing on the A120 – until the largest of the three was stolen, along with two other contenders elsewhere in the village.

The school also won the best in show prize, a specially commissioned scarecrow plate made by Alexandra Booth of Bricolage. Prize for the best ‘whacky’ scarecrow went to John and Angela Fardell for their witch on a broomstick. Olivia Elton Barratt, who opened the fete and judged the competition, had the unenviable task of picking winners from nearly 40 scarecrows dotted around the village.

Vintage vehicles on show included a Routemaster bus, a 1.5 litre Riley, an original Lambretta scooter, a 1958 Matchless motorcycle and a magnificently restored 1956 Dennis (fire engine – complemented by its modern day equivalent with a surprise visit by a fire engine from the Bishop’s Stortford Fire Station.

As well as more than 30 stalls and a busy barbecue and beer tent, the crowd was entertained by the primary school choir and the Little Hadham karata club whose senior members performed eye-watering feats by breaking tiles and baseball bats with head, hand, feet and shin.

The Fun Day, the first major event in the Little Hadham parish plan calendar, raised around £2,000, providing a fund for future events and a substantial donation to the village hall repair fund.
